You all shit me to tears...
This post was originally called "requirements and objectives", but to be honest - it was sucky and boring... Here's attempt number two...
You shit me to tears! It's nothing personal, I think you're a great person - but when it comes to dealing with business in the real world, you haven't got a clue. Being a relatively young, full-time programmer - you might wonder how I can make this type of bold and spiteful comment. Stop being so naive and have a think about it.
Your problem isn't that you can pick up and phone and talk to someone, it's your manner - you're arrogant and naive and it shows. But that's okay, because as long as the job gets done - who cares? Right? Wrong.
So many people say that they are committed to doing things properly and at a high level of quality. Unfortunately this is not the case, as often your own disorganisation and lack of discipline leads you to pull everything together at the last minute.
I can't help but be reminded of this passage from a book...
"If you believe a truck is coming toward you, you will jump out of the way. That is belief in the reality of the truck. If you tell people you fear the truck but do nothing to get out of the way, that is not belief in the truck. Likewise, it is not belief to say God exists and then continue sinning and hoarding your wealth while innocent people die of starvation. When belief does not control your most important decisions, it is not belief in the underlying reality, it is belief in the usefulness of believing." -- Scott Adams, God's Debris (read online)
If you were truly committed to do something properly, you'd take care and plan these things through - you'd be able to work through any problems and come out ahead of time with the finished product.
Saying something like "I ran out of time", "It was X, Y and Z's fault", or "It couldn't be done" is an excuse. There might be some truth behind what you're saying, but nothing that could not be addressed and resolved.
Does this type of behaviour sound familiar to you? It sure as hell does to me. I get it at work, my team at WALAN and others. People who are otherwise a delight to be around become truly insufferable hypocrites who couldn't take ownership to save their lives.
ARGH!!!
